Why Marriages Succeed or Fail and How You Can Make Yours Last by John Gottman, Ph.D. This book is different from other relationship books in that it is based on 20 years of scientific research on over 2000 couples. Based on research findings, Gottman’s team is able to predict with 94% accuracy which relationships will succeed and which will fail. Some of the findings are surprising. This book is easy to read and can help you evaluate and strengthen your relationship. I strongly recommend it.

If the Buddha Dated: A Handbook for Finding Love on a Spiritual Path

by Charlotte Kasl, Ph.D. This sweet, simple book is one of the best books on relationships I have seen in a long time. Kasl focuses on dating and new relationships, but offers much practical wisdom about relationships in whatever stage. She guides us in staying “awake” and aware on our spiritual path as we connect and deepen our relationships.

If the Buddha Married: Creating Enduring Relationships on a Spiritual Path by Charlotte Kasl. Okay, I know this is the third book I have reviewed by Kasl in six months, but I am really enjoying and learning from her books. Here, again, is a simple readable book in which Kasl shares deep and powerful insights about our lives and our relationships.

A Home for the Heart: A Personal Guide to Intimate and Social Relationships by Charlotte Kasl.

This is a great book by the author of If the Buddha Dated. Charlotte guides us in relating authentically and compassionately to partners, friends, family and community. With gentle passion and practical wisdom, she helps us understand our deep need for connecting and the healing power of relationships. She discusses the fears and roadblocks we encounter on our journey to and in relationship. And, she gives practical and philosophical steps we can take to create the life, relationships and community we desire. If you are interested in a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships, I highly recommend this book.

Breaking Through to Teens by Ron Taffel

This book provides an amazing window in to the world of today’s adolescent. What we used to call “at-risk” behavior is now normal teen behavior. Taffel provides hope and guidance for making a difference in the lives of teens through building a relationship—and he tells you very specifically how to do it. The book is written for therapists, but I believe it would be an excellent resource for parents and anyone who works with teens.
